Germany 1-0 England: Lukas Podolski Scores A Stunner In His Final International Appearance
Lukas
Podolski brought the curtain down on his international career with a
sensational strike to defeat the old enemy.
The
former Arsenal striker celebrated winning his 130th and final cap for Germany
by beating Joe Hart with a thunderbolt from fully 30 yards.
The
31-year-old is now at Galatasaray, but featured for Germany in what was his
final international appearance against England.
And
he certainly made it a night that he never would forget thanks to his stunning
goal in the 69th minute to give the hosts the lead.
Matches
between the two countries are usually lively and eventful affairs, but being a
friendly just days before crucial World Cup qualifiers, both took their feet
off the gas with one eye on the more important fixtures.
Some
might say England should have had a penalty in the first half when Jamie Vardy
clumsily tumbled over Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, but talking points were few and
far between.
That
is until Podolski managed to ensure himself a fairy tale ending to his international
career by slamming a quality long range effort past Joe Hart in the England
goal.
Following
some decent build up play from Germany, the Polish-born striker received the
ball just outside the box, where he carved some space for himself before unleashing
an unstoppable shot right into the top corner.
Unfortunately
for England, they were unable to find a reply to the goal, though Gareth
Southgate can be proud of what he saw from his side both before and after the
strike.
This
result won't matter much to him, but he'll come away with a much better idea of
how his new system could work in the future.
